Pilot says rabbits chewing on wires in his engine disabled his car at DIA

DENVER — The rabbits are eating wires again in parking lots around Denver International Airport.

“The wiring to sensors on my transmission were chewed to the tune of $428,” said Robert Favuzza, a pilot. “When I took it in, they told me many German cars have wires that have a soy based coating on them … something rabbits seem to like to chew on.”

Airport managers indicate they do take complaints from time to time about chewed wires and hoses, but are quick to add in 2013 there were only three filed … in 2014 five complaints came in and none so far this year. They says that is out of some 4.5 million ‘parks’ by vehicles. They also say they work with the USDA to trap and relocate the furry bunnies, because they attract raptors, which can cause problems for planes in flight.

The bottom line for Favuzza: His claims were denied by the city and his insurance company. The reason for the denial was unclear he said. For now, he is using a $2 rubber snake to keep the rabbits away … each time he flies out, the snake goes under his car, just in case.
