Original ‘Star Wars’ costumes featured in new Denver Art Museum exhibit

Star Wars costumes going on display at Denver Art Museum

DENVER — It’s as close as you’re going to get to the real characters of “Star Wars.”

They’re the real characters’ real costumes on display at the Denver Art Museum. It’s called Star Wars and the Power of Costume.

“What we really want to show here is not only the costumes that encapsulate the Star Wars universe but also allow visitors to get really up close to see the incredible and exquisite detail,” said Saul Sopoci Drake, the Smithsonian Institution Exhibitions project director.

More than 70 original costumes from all seven “Star Wars” films will be on display. Original costumes from Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker are included.

“This show is really unique. It’s kind of  the first time that all these costumes have come together like this,” Drake said.

Before the exhibit is open to the public, all the costumes are painstakingly unpacked, inspected, groomed and prepared for presentation.

“It really looks at the behind the scenes process of actually creating these costumes. So it’s a real different take on what you think a Star Wars show should be,” Drake said.

The show opens at the Denver Art Museum on Nov. 13.
