DENVER — A man died after falling out of a second-floor apartment window while trying to escape a fire early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out in the 3800 block of North Federal Boulevard about 1 a.m., the Denver Fire Department said.
The man, 50, was in the window when residents of the building who already had escaped tried to move a ladder into position so he could get down. But the lost his balance and fell to the sidewalk.
Firefighters performed CPR on the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man has not been identified.
Four other residents of the building were on a balcony on the west side of the building and were rescued by firefighters. Three people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. A relative of the man who died suffered a medical episode after arriving and was treated by paramedics.
The fire was contained to one unit and it will be some time before residents will be allowed to return home. The American Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced by the fire.
Firefighters were initially called to the wrong address, delaying their arrival to the scene.
Investigators with Denver Fire and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are looking into the cause of the fire.
