FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. — The Hayden Pass Fire is continuing to burn and is at 16,350 acres, officials said Sunday. Crews say 140 families have been evacuated because of the fire.
Firefighters have it 30 percent contained and are trying to keep it from spreading. Officials don’t expect full containment until early October. Officials said they have 908 total personnel on scene and continue to try to prevent fire growth.
The fire started July 8 because of a lightning strike, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Residents began evacuating when the fire quickly grew because of hot temperatures and windy conditions.
Elsewhere in Colorado, the Beaver Creek Fire, the state’s largest wildfire, continues to burn near the Colorado-Wyoming border. It was at 22,885 acres with 5 percent containment on Sunday morning, officials said. It also isn’t expected to be fully contained until October.
