DENVER — Officer John Adsit took the first step toward putting a horrific accident behind him Wednesday at Porter Adventist Hospital.
Surrounded by family, friends and fellow officers, Adsit walked to the podium to offer words of inspiration. He said, “But for the grace of God I wouldn’t be standing here today … it’s overwhelming to me all of the community support.”
Adsit had been hospitalized since early December after a car hit him on East Colfax Avenue in Denver as he escorted high school protesters.
The 43-year-old father of four has endured more than ten surgeries, making his recovery and ability to walk something many describe as “miraculous.”
Officer Andrew Nuanes was hit by a drunk driver in LoDo while on duty. His father and brother, both police officers as well, have also suffered from motorcycle collisions caused by motorists.
He said Officer Adsit is taking a tough step but will be fine because he has a strong support network. “We know what it feels like to be in the hospital away from everybody, then that day you’ve got to walk back out, get back to your life.”
First things first though, Officer Adsit said there’s one thing he can’t wait to do, “I’m so excited to be leaving and sleeping in my own bed tonight.”
Denver police aren’t saying whether officer Adsit is expected to return to duty in District 6. He says he hopes supporters who displayed blue lights in his honor will leave them up for a couple of nights so he can get a chance to see them.
The GoFundMe page that was set up for his family to pay for medical bills has raised over $75,000 since it was created on Dec. 4.
