GREELEY, Colo. — An off-duty firefighter with the Greeley Fire Department died following a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning.
According to the Greeley Police Department, officers and firefighters responded to the intersection of 14th Avenue and 5th Street around 6:30 a.m. to a report of a crash involving an SUV and a motorcycle. The SUV driver left the scene.
When officers arrived, they found a man in the street and a heavily damaged motorcycle. The man was unconscious and not breathing. First responders began performing CPR. He was taken to North Colorado Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
The Weld County Coroner identified the victim as Steven Michael Kuzik, of Greeley. The 21-year veteran of GFD was on his way to work.
The SUV’s driver was found and placed into custody. GPD identified the suspect as Cody Shane Boetger. He is charged with hit-and-run resulting in death, driving under denial and driving on the wrong side of the road.
According to police, evidence indicates Boetger was driving westbound on 5th Street when he veered into the eastbound lanes and struck Kuzik head-on.
GPD said Kuzik was awarded Firefighter of the Year by GFD two years ago.
Boetger then fled the scene and continued westbound after the collision on 5th Street and was eventually contacted near Weld County Road 37 and AA Street by a Greeley Officer and taken into custody. pic.twitter.com/2nkZZKwPZH
