‘Underground’: WGN America’s next historical offering gets a March premiere

WGN America’s latest series inspired by historical events, “Underground,” revealed two new trailers on Monday (Dec. 14).

Based on the journey of the slaves through the Underground Railroad, the story follows an enslaved blacksmith by the name of Noah (Aldis Hodge), who secretly brings together a small group of slaves who dare to leave their plantation and trek across hundreds of miles to freedom.

Leaving the plantation, the group will risk life and limb and come across many dangerous obstacles along the way. The escape thriller will have 10 hour-long episodes following their journey to freedom. The series also stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Christopher Meloni, Jessica de Gouw, Alano Miller and Jussie Smollett.

Joining their other series “Manhattan,” which is also presented as historical fiction, “Underground” is created by Misha Green (“Sons Of Anarchy,” “Heroes”) and Joe Pokaski (“Daredevil,” “Heroes,”) while Grammy and Oscar-winner John Legend serves as executive producer.

Sony Pictures Television and Tribune Studios are producing the series. “Underground” premieres Wednesday, March 9 on WGN America.
