HICKORY, N.C. — A North Carolina mom claims Facebook threatened to ban her from the site for life after she posted what the social media giant called a “pornographic” photo of her young daughter.
Jill White posted an image of her two-year-old daughter recreating the classic “Coppertone Girl” ad. The photo, which showed the little girl’s buttocks, was reported to Facebook, WBTV reported.
White said she was banned for 24 hours. She then re-posted the photo, this time blurring out her daughter’s buttocks.
That photo was also rejected and Facebook threatened her with her a lifetime ban, White said.
Once the story began being reported across the country, Facebook spoke out, disputing that they ever threatened a lifetime ban.
“It is hard. With over 1 billion people using Facebook we have to put in place a set of universal guidelines that respect the views of a wide range of people,” a Facebook spokesperson said.
The company says they removed the first photo because it violated the site’s rules by showing a bare buttocks. The censored photo has since been restored and has not been removed from Facebook, White said.
