LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. — The pictures of a Michigan dog found last week with an arrow through her head are heart-breaking.

The good news is: the pup is healing well.

Animal control officials said they were shocked to hear who has admitted to shooting the dog.

This is one bizarre incident. As a matter of fact, the Lapeer County Animal Control Chief Officer said in her many years of dealing with animals, she’s never seen anything like this. And miraculously, tonight the dog is alive and doing well.

You wouldn’t know it, but Gemma should be dead.

Because just last week, a crossbow was sticking out of her head. Tonight the wound is still fresh.

“Never seen it before. It’s just amazing, and disturbing,” said Aimee Orn, MI Chief Animal Control Officer.

Lapeer County Chief Animal Control Officer Aimee Orn said it’s a miracle Gemma is still alive.

The two-year-old retriever mix stumbled up to this home south of north branch last Monday. A contractor found her and called 911. The dog was rushed to an animal hospital where the arrow was removed.

Aimee Orn said, “Miraculously the arrow had missed her brain, her optic nerve, and just come out, gone in through the top of her skull and come out the roof of her mouth.”

A tip came in to animal control a day after she was found, about who might have done this. Orn said she couldn’t believe it.

“It’s actually her own owner is the one who did it, he claims that she aggressively went after his other dog, so, I don’t know that that’s a good enough reason,” Orn said.

She also said since Gemma has been in animal control’s possession, she hasn’t shown any signs of aggression. But some neighbors said, they’re pretty mad about the images they’ve seen.

Dennis Clark, a North Branch Resident said, “They should take it to the pound or something like that if they wanted to, instead of try and shoot the dog.”

“People like that shouldn’t be allowed to have any animals at all,” said another resident Robert Bates.

There is no word yet on if the owner is being charged, that’s in the hands of the Lapeer County Prosecutor.

Right now, Gemma is not up for adoption, but animal control officers think it’s possible that may change as she heals.
