BURLINGTON, Colo. — Police and sheriff’s deputies in eastern Colorado and western Kansas captured a man suspected of killing his mother following a high speed chase on I-70 early Friday morning.

Jack Clemons was wanted for murder in Lexington, Kentucky. An alert police officer in Burlington spotted his vehicle and a chase ensued that covered 81 miles at speeds of 125 miles an hour that crossed from Colorado into Kansas.

The narrative of the press release issued by Burlington Police Chief Barry Romans tells the story the best. It appears below:

“On Friday, July 17, 2015 at about at about 2:41 a.m. Officer Jamie Foster of the Burlington Police Department had received information from Dispatch concerning a car with Kentucky plates being driven by 36-year-old Jack Clemons, suspected in the murder of his mother in Lexington, Kentucky.”

“Officer Foster drove to the 437 exit where he waited only a few moments before noticing a vehicle leaving Burlington matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Officer Foster then followed the vehicle onto west bound I-70 [when it] suddenly stopped about one mile east of Bethune then sped off westbound starting a pursuit.”

“Officer Foster pursued the vehicle on I-70 to Vona where the vehicle then turned back eastbound on I-70 and sped along I-70 exceeding speeds of 125 miles per hour.”

“Sheriff [Tom] Ridnour of the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit at Vona and the suspect was pursued east on I-70 past Burlington where Sgt. Hill, Officer Bierbaum and Chief Romans of the Burlington Police Department and Deputy Newbury of the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office blocked the 437 and 438 exits to prevent Clemons from entering Burlington. Once Clemons passed both exits, all officers entered the pursuit.”

“Clemons was pursued into Kansas where the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office also assisted until mile marker 17. At that point Goodland Police Officer Parker ‘spike-stripped’ Clemons’ car, deflating the front tires and ending the 81-mile pursuit at MM19 in Kansas.”

Clemons was arrested without further incident at about 3:45 a.m. and returned to Burlington where he was held on the homicide warrant out of Kentucky and numerous traffic violations related to the chase on the Eastern Plains.

Burlington Police Chief Romans said he was pleased with the performance of his officers and the assistance of officers and deputies from the other agencies. He was also grateful that no one was injured.
