AURORA, Colo. — The man who killed a 17-year-old Aurora teen a month before he was to graduate from high school will spend the next 40 years in prison.

Ever Olivos-Gutierrez drank 10 beers on the night of March 24, 2014. While driving home, he slammed into Juan Dominguez-Palomino killing him instantly.

Olivos-Gutierrez had three previous DUIs before this crash.

Police said Olivos-Gutierrez was driving 80 mph when he ran a red light, crashing into the blue Camaro on East Colfax Avenue near Dayton Street.

At sentencing, he broke down crying several times, once when his daughter spoke and the second time when pictures of the victim were shown during a slide show.

Olivos-Gutierrez’s daughter went to high school with the victim. She said both were best friends.

Olivos-Gutierrez’s daughter said she prayed it wasn’t Juan when she saw the blue Camaro on the news. But she cried when his name was released by police.

The defense said Olivos-Gutierrez became an alcoholic after he lost his 2-year-old son to a heart defect.

Juan’s mother said it was a very difficult and sad day. She misses the time with her son and his adorable smile.

“Since 2014 I don’t see him in his bed …” she said.

The judge said it will take time for the family to heal. But it was strike three for Olivos-Gutierrez and she sentenced him to the maximum time in prison.
