DENVER — The federal tax filing deadline is less than a week away but some taxpayers are finding out their refund check has already been mailed to someone else.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported seeing a 75 percent increase in the number of fraud complaints to their office compared to the 2014 tax season.

“The quicker you report this information to the IRS and to the state of Colorado, the better off you’re going to be,” said Susan Medina, a spokesperson with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation during an interview on Thursday.

The department is encouraging people who have become victims of tax fraud to file a report with their local police department and to call a fraud unit to receive assistance.
