CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Castle Rock is considering a new housing development, but some worry it will cost the town its charm.
Castle Rock is one of the fastest growing parts of the Denver metro area. With major retail developments such as the Promenade at Castle Rock already under construction, demand for housing is rising.
Developers are planning to add hundreds of new homes, townhomes and apartments to the undeveloped land in the Terrain neighborhood. Some neighbors do not agree with the move.
“I think development is fine, but you need to work with what already exists and to put dense housing right up against large acreage property doesn’t make sense to me,” Mary Ellen Miller said.
Miller owns a nine-acre property that looks over Terrain. She worries the new homes will take away from the charm that makes Castle Rock unique.
“It feels like it’s becoming more like Highlands Ranch,” Miller said. “And that’s fine if that’s what you want. But what we came out here for was the countryside and the animals.”
The development plan is in its very early stages. It will be heard before the Castle Rock Planning Commission on Thursday and before the full town council on Aug. 18. Both meetings will include public comment sessions.
