DENVER — Tuesday marks the first major deadline for Coloradans to sign up for health insurance.
According to Enroll America, 11 percent of Denver County residents are uninsured. Those residents could face hundreds of dollars in fines come tax time.
FOX31 Denver sat down with Ezra Watland, the Regional Manager for Enroll America.
He shared five things Coloradans need to know:
1- The Deadline
The open enrollment period began in November. It runs through Jan. 31, 2016. Whether you’re currently uninsured or you need to change you plan, enrolling by tomorrow will guarantee that your new coverage will start on Jan. 1, 2016. For more information visit EnrollAmerica.org.
2- The Cost
You could be eligible for financial help to lower the cost of coverage. Use the “Get Covered Calculator Tool” online to figure out how much financial assistance you’re eligible to receive.
3- Free Help
If you’re confused by the process or have any questions or concerns, you can get in-person help locally – at no cost. Just go to the Connect for Health Colorado website and find the “Get Covered Connector Tool” to find local application assisters.
4- The Marketplace
Plans and prices on the marketplace change every year. So it’s important to check out your options. Those with HealthOP will need to select a new plan, because the HealthOP plan will not be available in 2016. If you don’t want a gap in coverage, check out your options with Connect For Health Colorado online and enroll in a new plan.
5 – Fines
If you don’t have coverage by the final deadline of Jan. 31, 2016, you could face a fine when you file your taxes. That would either be $695 or 2.5 percent of your yearly income, whichever is greater. The fine will only increase each year.
