LOUISVILLE, Colo. — A teacher at Monarch High School is under investigation for giving marijuana edibles to students, the Louisville Police Department said.

Police arrested Brian du Fresne at his home Tuesday. He is facing two counts of illegal distribution of marijuana.

According to his biography, du Fresne, 49, has been a music and language arts teacher at Monarch for 17 years. In March 2015, he led a group of choir students to London to perform. Outside of work, he is a professional organist.

The Boulder Valley School District is not releasing details regarding the arrest. In a letter to parents Wednesday, principal Jerry Lee Anderson wrote:

“A Monarch High staff member, Brian du Fresne, has been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal investigation. I realize that a situation like this is difficult for everyone involved. There is nothing else that I can share with you regarding this matter because it is a confidential personnel issue. What I do want to share is that I will continue to place first the welfare and safety of every student at Monarch High School. I am grateful that MHS is a very caring community, and I trust that we will all be patient and supportive of one another while this investigation is underway.”

Du Fresne’s arrest documents detail an incident on Feb. 22 in which two students went to lunch with him in his personal vehicle during the school day.

The students told police du Fresne took them to Tokyo Joe’s, gave them marijuana candies, then the students went back to school high. According to police, another student found out and told administrators.

During the investigation, students told police about another alleged incident in which du Fresne took a student to Noodles and Co., then smoked pot from a pipe in his vehicle with the student.

Not only is it illegal to give marijuana to minors, it is also against Boulder Valley School District policy for employees to give students rides in personal vehicles without administration approval. It is also against policy to engage in personal outings with students, regardless of parental consent.

This is not the first time du Fresne has been under investigation during his time at Monarch. In 2006, he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

According to the arrest documents, the district could only prove he “had the student over for dinner and helped with homework and such.” He was given a letter of reprimand.

Du Fresne has been placed on administrative leave. The school district had no further comment and police could not be reached for comment.
