HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Early Tuesday morning, Douglas County Sheriff deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the Foothills Park neighborhood of Highlands Ranch.

The deputies arrived, saw a man with a gun and tried to communicate with him, Sgt. Hanavan of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man with the rifle was asked by officers to put his weapon down but he wouldn’t comply.

After several attempts to calm the situation, the negotiation was to no avail, Sgt. Hanavan said.
