DENVER — A young man said he narrowly avoided becoming another victim of two Denver carjacking suspects who led police on a high-speed chase early Tuesday morning.
Police spent several days trying to track down suspects who carjacked a red Dodge pickup over the weekend. They finally caught up with the vehicle during a high-speed chase and crash near South Colorado Boulevard and East Mississippi Avenue.
Another driver, who recognized the pickup involved in the crash, has come forward to describe his attempted carjacking at the hands of the suspects.
“I know it’s the vehicle,” said Gabe, who FOX31 isn’t revealing to protect his identity. “Even the rims and everything were the same.”
Gabe contacted FOX31 and police after seeing the red pickup on TV on Tuesday morning. He said he’s still shaken by his own run-in with the men inside the pickup after they drove up next to him as he drove down Federal Boulevard on Sunday night.
“I look over and I see some guy with tattoos all over his face and he says, ‘What’s up, ese?’ to me, and I saw him reaching for something and so I sped away as fast as I could right away,” Gabe said. “Then all of a sudden I heard a loud bang noise.”
That noise came from a shotgun that blasted buckshot into the back window and frame of his Jeep.
“If they aimed a few feet closer, it could have been me,” Gabe said.
Instead, Gabe managed to elude them with a few quick turns.
“After that I just hid in my Jeep and called the police and hoped that they didn’t find me,” Gabe said.
Officers were able to find them first.
“They caught the guys and they found the truck and it had shotgun shells in it,” Gabe said.
Police said the pickup reached 75 mph during the chase, which ended in a violent crash.
“That’s closure and the guys are caught,” Gabe said. “They’re not on the streets still. That`s a good thing.”
Though he admits it’s still hard not to think what if.
“If I wouldn’t have sped off,” Gabe said. “They probably would have got me.”
The high-speed chase and crash damaged five vehicles in the parking lot of a motel, but the only people injured were the two men inside the pickup. Police said the suspects were taken to the hospital in serious, but nonlife-threatening, condition.
