LONGMONT, Colo. — Residents of Longmont are rallying together in support of Michelle Wilkins, the pregnant woman who was stabbed and had the fetus removed after answering a Craigslist ad for baby clothes that were for sale.

Over the weekend, hundreds of people showed up to support Wilkins and her family. Wilkins had surgery after the attack and is recovering at Longmont United Hospital.

At Longmont’s Loomiller Park, hundreds of people showed their love for Wilkins, with many holding candles, flowers or paper white hearts. Wilkins will get to see the flowers from the vigil when they are brought to her hospital room Monday.

The paper white hearts — as part of the White Heart Project — are appearing all across Longmont, from car windows and the front of stores, as a show of support.

The Coffee Clatch has a huge display to spread the love.

“We wanted to do as much as we could for the family, to let them know we’re here and we love them and as a community we’ll do whatever we can to make this full of love,” Ashlyn Bishop of the Coffee Clatch said.

Alisha Bunker, 37, is coordinating the White Heart Project to help people send their love and support to Wilkins. People are encouraged to add messages to white paper hearts and send them to Bunker at P.O. Box 461, Hygiene, CO, 80533.

In addition to the hearts decorated Sunday night, Bunker said she has received hundreds more with everything from children’s drawings to lengthy letters. Bunker plans to deliver the letters to Wilkins at the hospital.

Formal charges are expected to be filed this week against Dynel Lane, who is accused of stabbing and removing the baby. Lane is being held on $2 million bond. She was scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday but it has been pushed back to Friday.
