LONGMONT, Colo. — The Longmont Housing Authority has agreed to a $170,000 settlement with four residents who claimed police illegally searched their homes at a subsidized housing complex.
The Longmont Times-Call reported Friday the agreement comes after claims that officers didn’t get warrants before searching homes at the direction of the housing provider in 2017. The settlement is the second related to the searches of The Suites, a low-income housing complex that focuses on the disabled and elderly.
The city also agreed to pay $210,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union and the four residents in 2017.
Tenants provided the ACLU with copies of notices that described the searches as a training opportunity for dogs in the police department’s K-9 unit. Some said they feared they would be evicted if they refused to allow officers into their apartments.
