WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (KDVR) — The Wheat Ridge Police Department says an officer killed a man who was firing a shotgun into the air.
The department said no officers or other people were injured.
Calls came into Jeffcom911 around 1:40 p.m. about a man, who was later identified as 49-year-old Todd Fiepke, in the road at 29th Avenue and Ames Street carrying a shotgun, WRPD Division Chief Darrel Guadnola said.
Officers nearby responded and found the man traveling east on Ames Street firing the shotgun into the air.
When officers approached him, he “challenged police on multiple occasions, while brandishing his shotgun,” Guadnola said.
Officers fired at the suspect, striking him and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Guadnola said.
According to a tweet from the department, the shooting was near the intersection of 29th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, and people were asked to remain out of the area.
Edgewater police are assisting WRPD in the investigation.
FOX31 has a reporter heading to the scene. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
