DENVER (KDVR) — Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado was killed Monday night at Sol Tribe Tattoo and Piercing when a gunman went on a shooting spree that started there and stretched across Denver and into Lakewood.
She was killed alongside shop owner Alicia Cardenas. Jimmy Maldonado, Alyssa’s husband, was also shot and taken to the hospital where he is in the intensive care unit.
Friends say Gunn-Maldonado, 35, was a beloved yoga instructor and doula in Denver.
“I know her students are heartbroken,” Katrina Gustafson said. “She taught from the heart.”
Gustafson said Maldonado and her husband Jimmy had an incredible connection.
“She died in this world with a heart full of love, she found her mate, and they had a special thing,” she said.
Gustafson said the community continues wondering why the Maldonados were targeted.
“You don’t need to know Alyssa to be hurt by this,” Gustafson said. “This is such a violent act on innocent, sweet, beautiful people.”
Gunn-Maldonado was a stepmother to Jimmy’s young son according to a GoFundMe raising money for her funeral costs and Jimmy’s medical care.
