CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. — A vehicle fire shut down both directions of Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel Wednesday evening.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the interstate was closed between exit 205 and mile marker 215.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says a box truck hauling paper products caught fire in the eastbound lanes of the tunnel near the Summit County (western) side.

The fire is out.

The westbound lanes reopened about 8:15 p.m.

The eastbound lanes reopened shortly before 9:30 p.m. However, after being open for a brief time, they were closed again. They reopened once more about 10:20 p.m.

Authorities have not yet said whether anyone was injured.

CDOT plans to test the tunnel’s fire suppression system Thursday night. The plans were announced prior to the fire.
