LONGMONT, Colo. (KDVR) — A 93-year-old man is dead after a suspect tried to avoid a traffic stop, crashing into two cars in Longmont Thursday, according to police.

The deceased victim has been identified as Joe Gold of Longmont.

A spokesperson for the Longmont Police Department said an officer in a marked vehicle tried to pull over a driver in a suspected stolen car around the area of East Ninth Avenue and Martin Street.

The suspect drove away and hit two cars in the intersection of East 9th Avenue and Pace Street at 10:48 a.m., according to police. Two people in the third car were taken to the hospital.

Deputy Chief for Longmont Police Services Jeff Satur police stopped pursuing the suspect a mile before the crash.

Neighbor witnesses impact

Neighbors blocks away said they could hear the impact of the crash. Luc Vanlangenhoven lives at the corner of Ninth Avenue and Pace Street and heard it from his office.

“I looked over there and saw the worst accident I’ve ever seen,” he said. “This one was really bad.”

Vanlangenhoven said his neighbor saw cars go airborne moments after impact.

“A neighbor was mowing the lawn and did see the vehicles up in the air when they hit each other,” he said.

Vanlangehoven said the intersection is at the top of a hill, creating some visibility problems, especially if cars are going too fast.

Longmont Police are still investigating how fast the suspect was driving.

“By the looks of that truck, it could have been well over 100 miles an hour,” Vanlangenhoven said.

The 37-year-old suspect was taken into custody. Satur said they will be pursuing vehicular homicide charges and even first-degree murder charges with extreme indifference. Police will also be looking to see if drugs or alcohol were factors in the deadly wreck.

Police investigating 9th Ave. home

Just before 8 p.m., Longmont Police said they and SWAT were serving a “high-risk search warrant” at 10 Ninth Avenue in relation to the criminal investigation.

“While it is too early to release additional information about the other investigation, the suspect and vehicle were seen at the mobile home park prior to police attempting contact,” Longmont Deputy Police Chief Jeff Satur said in an email. “We do not know all the relationships of the parties involved, but this is part of our ongoing investigation.”
