DENVER (KDVR) — Five people died after a series of shootings across the Denver metro area Monday night that ended when the suspect was killed by police near the Belmar shopping center in Lakewood.

Police say there are at least six scenes, four in Denver and two in Lakewood, connected to the shooting spree.

5:25 p.m. – Intersection of 1st Avenue and Broadway in Denver

It all started just after 5 p.m. when the suspect opened fire near the intersection of 1st Avenue and Broadway in Denver. Two women, 44-year-old Alicia Cardenas and 35-year-old Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado, were killed and Jimmy Maldonado was injured in this shooting.

Around 5:30 p.m. – 6th Avenue and Bannock Street

One of the shooting scenes was at a residence at 6th Avenue and Bannock Street. Denver Police Commander Matt Clark said the shooter gained access to the residence, which also has a business attached to it, and shots were fired. Clark said the suspect knew the people there but no one was injured. The suspect also allegedly set a van in the alley on fire before leaving the scene.

5:45 p.m. – Near Cheesman Park

Next, the suspect shot and killed 67-year-old Michael Swinyard in the 1200 block of North Williams Street, a location right next to Cheesman Park. Swinyard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 5:50 p.m. – 8th Avenue and Zuni Street

The final incident in the City of Denver occurred at 8th Avenue and Zuni Street and involved a pursuit and an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect. No officers were injured, but the suspect did “disable” the police car allowing him to get away.

5:58 p.m. – Colfax and Kipling

The suspect was reported in Lakewood just before 6 p.m., firing shots near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Kipling Street. There, 38-year-old Danny “Dano” Scofield, owner of Lucky 13 Tattoo Parlor, was killed, and a description of the car and the shooter were given to police.

Around 6 p.m. – Belmar shopping area

A short time later, Lakewood officers spotted the car in the Belmar area, but when they tried to make contact the suspect opened fire. Officers shot back, but the suspect was able to leave the car and run away into the shopping area.

Police say the suspect showed his gun at a business in the area, which they described as felony menacing.

6:10 p.m. – Hyatt House in Belmar

The suspect then went to the nearby Hyatt House where he shot Sarah Steck who later died from her wounds.

Close to 6:15 p.m. – Belmar shopping district

The suspect then ran away from the Hyatt and had shot at officers, hitting one, who shot back and killed him. The officer who was shot was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery Monday night. She is expected to need additional surgeries as she recovers.

Many businesses in Belmar went into lockdown as police searched the area for additional suspects but, during a news conference around 8:15 p.m., Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen said investigators believe the suspect who was killed was the only shooter.
