DENVER (KDVR) — District Attorney Beth McCann announced Monday that the Denver District Attorney’s Office has charged a 14-year-old male juvenile and 18-year-old Neshan Johnson with the murder of 32-year-old Pamela Cabriales.

Cabriales was shot and killed while sitting in her car on Feb. 20 at Colfax Avenue and Interstate 25 in Denver, according to police.

A close friend and co-worker said she and Cabriales were out to dinner that night at Ocean Prime in Denver for a girls night out. Cabriales was shot driving home.

The suspects fled the scene, which led to southbound I-25 at West Colfax being shutdown while officers searched for them, according to Denver police.

Cabriales’ family responded to the news of the suspects facing charges. Alex Cabriales, Pamela’s brother, said Pamela was a beautiful person.

“It was inhumane what they did to my sister,” Alex said. “It was terrible. I mean I don’t want to be graphic, but I was at the hospital with her. The whole top of her head was blown off, her brain was exposed. The community needs to know what these people did. My sister was beautiful.” 

Alex also wants the community to get involved.

“This is a call to action. Beth McCann has the power to make sure these two individuals never walk free a day in their life and don’t kill anyone else. It’s not even for us. It’s for the community, for other families. We don’t want other families to go through what we’re going through. We’ve gone through this twice already. Criminals get out and kill again. We’ve experienced it.” 

Alex said his 14-year-old brother was shot and killed in 1994 and that the killer served a few years in prison, got out and killed again.

“We didn’t speak up or say anything then. It got swept under the rug. I know the head of the DA’s office believes in rehabilitation, especially with minors. but there are just some individuals you cannot offer rehabilitation to. You need to look at severity of crime, their record,” he said. 

Pamela’s mother said, “She was so kind with everybody. She had a lot of friends.” Alex added, “No matter how busy she was, she would stop in and check on my mom.” 

The juvenile’s name and arrest photo are not being released because of the juvenile’s age. He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, and several other charges related to first-degree murder, according to the DA’s office.

The DA’s office also charged Johnson with multiple counts of murder in the first degree, several other charges related to first-degree murder, and vehicular eluding.

Multiple law enforcement sources confirm the 14-year-old has a lengthy criminal history.

“[The 14-year-old] shouldn’t have been out with his record, his criminal history, it’s a lengthy criminal history. It’s the criminal history of a 20-year career criminal,” Alex said. “You know, he’s 14 years old. There is no way this minor should’ve been out. I don’t understand why he was out, why the authorities let him walk. It could’ve been prevented if they had enforced the law. Now because of the courts not doing their job, my sister had to lose her life.”

Alex’s mother agrees. She said, “If he’s done this before and he gets out and kills my daughter, he’s going to do it again. He is a danger for this community, for everybody.”

“We don’t want this to happen again to anybody. It is hell on earth,” Alex said. 

The family has set up a GoFundMe account for Pamela’s 6-year-old son.
