AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Police said a 16-year-old boy chased down and shot at an off-duty officer during a road rage incident, then he took his own life during a standoff.

The shooting led to an hours-long SWAT response at an Aurora apartment on Thursday. Police eventually found the teen dead inside the apartment with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

The department said the incident began shortly after 8 a.m. when the Aurora police officer — uniformed but in her personal vehicle after her shift — honked at the driver of a red sedan who cut her off. It happened in a parking lot at Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road.

Road rage driver ‘fired multiple rounds’

As the officer left the parking lot, “the driver of the red sedan drove across opposing lanes of traffic to again cut off the officer,” according to police. The driver of the sedan chased the officer westbound on Mississippi to Interstate 225, where he pulled up to the vehicle and a passenger “leaned halfway outside of the car and fired multiple rounds at the officer,” police said.

The officer reported the sedan’s license plate to 911. Police said they traced the vehicle to its registered address in the 1100 block of South Elkhart Way, near Mississippi and Sable Boulevard.

Efforts to negotiate were unsuccessful, police said.

“At 10:24 a.m., in an effort to (elicit) a response and establish contact, officers fired a 40mm foam projectile against the siding of the apartment building. Shortly thereafter, a sound consistent with a gunshot was heard from inside the apartment,” the department said in the release.

SWAT teams and crisis negotiators responded to the scene and tried to contact the suspect for several hours. A reverse 911 call was sent to residents in the apartment complex urging them to shelter in place.

Police said they ultimately entered the apartment at 2:20 p.m. and found the teen dead.

His identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once next-of-kin is notified.

Shell casings found on I-225

Police closed southbound Interstate 225 between Mississippi and Iliff avenues around 3:30 p.m. to search for evidence in the incident, according to the department. It reopened just before 4:30 p.m.

Police said they “located numerous shell casings on the interstate possibly related to this earlier incident.”

The owner of the red sedan, a 26-year-old man, was taken into custody. Police did not release further information about that man or whether he is suspected of a crime.
