JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened early Thursday morning.

The sheriff’s office said it happened just after midnight near 8055 West Bowles Avenue.

Deputies were called to the area for a person who told them they believed they were being followed.

The sheriff’s office said the caller then pulled into the parking lot at Vasa Fitness and waited for deputies to arrive.

After that, a deputy arrived to the parking lot and was talking to the man when he started acting suspicious and making erratic statements. The suspect suddenly and without provocation, attacked a deputy. The deputy then pushed the suspect backwards, then he pulled out a knife and started coming at the deputy a second time.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy fired several shots at the suspect and that caused him to fall to the ground. The deputy then held the suspect at gunpoint until other deputies arrived on scene.

When other deputies arrived, the suspect actively resisted arrest until he was eventually taken into custody.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition. He has been identified as Mark Madera, 30.

Madera was arrested for criminal attempt first degree murder, first degree assault of a peace officer, felony menacing and resisting arrest.

No other injuries were reported.

The First Judicial District Attorney’s Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
