WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – A disturbance in a community near Fort Lupton ended in an officer-involved shooting and a 60-year-old suspect dead.
No officers were injured.
Multiple agencies responded to the Aristocrat Ranchettes subdivision just outside of Fort Lupton around 8:45 a.m.
A female called 911, saying a man with a gun wouldn’t leave her home and threatened to kill her.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located the man outside of the house and ordered him to drop his weapon. After several minutes of interacting with the suspect, police say an officer-involved shooting occurred.
There were several witnesses to the shooting and one person caught the entire incident on video.
The footage was shown to FOX31 reporter Aimee Lewis, who said the video showed the man slowly walking towards authorities who had their guns drawn, shouting for the man to drop the gun in his hand. The man appeared to ignore police commands and continued walking towards police. That’s when authorities opened fire.
Sandra Myre who lives in the Aristocrat Ranchettes subdivision got a “shelter-in-place” alert on her phone moments before the shooting happened.
“We hear a lot of gunfire out here, we live in the country,” said Myre. “A lot of people own guns and target practice all the time. People having guns, isn’t something we are not used to.”
It’s unclear if the victim was a resident in the neighborhood. Police haven’t yet identified the man.
Authorities will not release further details about the shooting or which agency was specifically involved.
This is a developing story. More details will be reported as they are received.
