DENVER (KDVR) — While many skiers and snowboarders are heading back from hitting the slopes, snow continues to fall making road conditions not so great from the mountain corridor to the metro Denver area.
(10:23 p.m.): I-225 northbound has reopened at Mississippi Avenue.
(9:16 p.m.): Northbound Interstate 225 at Illiff Avenue in Aurora is shut down due to a multi-vehicle crash south of Mississippi Avenue. Police said to avoid the area.
(8:59 p.m.): Westbound I-70 is closed due to a crash from Loveland Pass to Silverthorne.
(8:04 p.m.): Denver Police and the Colorado Department of Transportation said Interstate 25 northbound from University Boulevard to US 6 has reopened after several crashes were cleaned up. CDOT’s Timothy Hoover told FOX31:
“We have information showing there were multiple pileups on I-25, some of them involving maybe 10 or more vehicles. I can’t say for sure how many. Folks need to slow down, they need to leave plenty of room for the vehicle ahead of them and they need to understand all-wheel drive is not all-wheel stop. Your four-wheel drive does not mean you can stop faster. If you really don’t have to be out, sit at home and watch Netflix.”
(7:25 p.m.): Eastbound I-70 has closed again between Silverthorne and Loveland Pass, according to CDOT.
(7:10 p.m.): Interstate 70 eastbound has reopened from Silverthorne to Loveland Pass but now US 6 (Loveland Pass) is full of traffic.
(5:32 p.m.): US 6 has reopened between Sheridan Boulevard and Interstate 25, Jeffco Sheriff tweeted.
(5:03 p.m.): US 6 is closed for safety reasons between Interstate 25 and CO 95 (Sheridan Boulevard).
(4:55 p.m.): The Denver Police Department said there are six separate crashes that have closed traffic northbound on Interstate 25 between University Boulevard and US 6. The Denver Fire Department said there are more than 50 vehicles involved.
(4:52 p.m.): CDOT has reopened eastbound traffic from Vail Pass to Loveland Pass.
(4:35 p.m.): The Interstate 25 corridor has a multi-vehicle crash that closed down northbound traffic between University Boulevard and US 6.
The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 from Vail Pass to Loveland Pass as the mountain corridor begins to get crowded with drivers heading back to the metro.
Here are some key things to keep in mind from the American Automotive Association when traveling on snowy, icy roads with limited visibility and know before you go:
- Drive slowly – the adjustment in speed can help with lower traction.
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Apply the gas slowly so you can regain traction and avoid skids.
- Don’t follow too closely. Increase your distance between you and the next car to give room for slower stopping.
- Don’t stop if you can avoid it. Yes, this sounds strange when you are driving that you shouldn’t stop, but AAA says there is a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
- Don’t power up hills. If you’re stepping on the gas to power up on snow-covered hills, you’re just going to make your wheels spin. Try getting a little inertia going before getting going up the hill and let that inertia get you to the top.
- Don’t stop going up a hill. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway and then take the hill.
