AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A Regional Transportation District train derailed on Wednesday afternoon, injuring multiple people, the Aurora Police Department said.

The RTD train got off track at the intersection of East Exposition Avenue and South Sable Boulevard. Three people were treated on scene by paramedics and taken to local hospitals, APD said. No vehicles were involved.

The southbound train had 24 people aboard, Aurora Police spokesperson Matthew Longshore said.

Aurora Fire Rescue was assessing the situation with APD and the area was expected to be closed for an extended time. As of 5:45 p.m., police said the intersection would be closed for at least 12 hours. Drivers can detour on Chambers Road or Abilene Street, police said.

Shuttle buses were to replace the R Line after the incident, according to RTD. Trains will run between Lincoln Station to Florida Station and between Peoria Station and 13th Avenue Station while a bus bridge is installed, RTD said.

This is not the first derailment at that intersection. A passenger was seriously injured when they were ejected from an RTD train after it derailed on Jan. 28, 2019, during a snowstorm.
