COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) — Police said they exchanged gunfire with at least one suspect associated with a drunk-driving call in an incident that led to a nearly three-hour standoff and shelter-in-place.

Although authorities initially said the incident involved road rage, the Commerce City Police Department said in a press release that they responded around 6:15 p.m. to a report of a driver under the influence in the 7500 block of Brighton Road.

“Upon arrival, officers were shot at by at least one suspect associated with the vehicle. Officers returned fire and the suspects fled in a vehicle,” the release stated.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit of the vehicle until it crashed in the 7600 block of Brighton Road.

“The occupants of the vehicle refused to exit and members of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Commerce City Police Department SWAT responded,” according to the release.

A shelter-in-place was issued for people in the area of East 74th Avenue and East 76th Avenue and Brighton Road as the standoff continued, with the Sheriff’s Office saying it involved an “active shooter.” Just before 9 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said the scene was “secure.”

Police said two males were hospitalized with injuries, but the source of those injuries was not immediately released.

A witness shared video with FOX31 that captured the sound of gunfire during the police response, although it’s unclear who was firing the shots.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Team will investigate.
