DENVER — A man was wounded in a shooting in the Baker neighborhood on Thursday night, the Denver Police Department said.
The shooting happened about 10 p.m. near West First Avenue and Bannock Street, police said. It happened after an apparent street robbery.
The man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition. His name and age were not released.
Police did not release any suspect information.
Neighbors told FOX31 they were shocked by all of the flashing lights.
“I saw all the cops and my grandson come in and said they shot somebody there,” Betty Field said from her front porch, just feet away from where the shooting happened.
It also happens to be just steps away from where her son, John, was shot two years ago.
“It was so sad. But he lived for a while,” Field said. “The bullet went through his arm and blew all his stomach out. Then he died.”
Since then, violent crime in Baker has come and gone.
Homicides are up this year, but aggravated assaults, auto thefts and car break-ins are all down.
“From my limited scope of the crime, I’d say yeah, crime has definitely gone down in this neighborhood from what it was,” said Nick Iovino, who’s lived in the area since the 1970’s.
