LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — The Lakewood Police Department said two people are dead and one is in the hospital after a shooting in the middle of a neighborhood near Colfax and Sheridan.

Police initially thought there was a fourth person involved, but they said Friday that was not the case and that everyone involved was accounted for. They said no suspect was in custody but do not believe there is a threat to the community.

“While the nature of a connection between the three males shot is still unknown, it is apparent that they were familiar with each other in some manner,” Lakewood Police said in a news release.

Police said they responded around 11:52 a.m. to a report of gunfire at a home in the 5200 block of West 14th Avenue, between Ames Street and Sheridan Boulevard. They found three males shot, one of whom was dead. A second male died at a hospital, while a third is expected to survive.

“Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene,” police said.

Gunfire in the street in Lakewood neighborhood

Seth Ingenthrone was on his bike when he heard gunfire.

“I was riding up the alley here and I heard 25 or 30 shots. I live down the street. I come through here all the time. It’s kind of a rough part of the neighborhood but this was a little out of the norm,” Ingenthrone said.

Ingenthrone said he arrived moments before police and saw the gunshot victims. Police say the shooting happened in the street around a car, now riddled with bullets.

Wilson West lives nearby.

“It’s just a bad corner It’s been like this for a long time. I could have been right here. If I would have left a little while earlier, I would have been right here,” West said.

Another neighbor said he heard a volley of gunfire.

“I’m not sure if people saw it take place, but plenty of people heard it. You have several firearms. People shooting at each other. Everyone in the neighborhood heard it, we know that for sure,” Lakewood Police spokesperson John Romero said.

No age or other identifying information was released about the people involved.

Police closed West 14th from Sheridan Boulevard to Chase Street for the investigation.
