Pipe bomb disabled by bomb squad at Littleton Safeway

LITTLETON, Colo. (KDVR) — Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad technicians disabled a real pipe bomb behind a Safeway grocery store Tuesday afternoon, the Littleton Police Department said.

Investigators don’t know how long the device had been at the location but confirmed there was a timer on top and called it a live bomb, officials said.

Police were called out to investigate the threat of a pipe bomb around 1 p.m. In addition to ACSO and Littleton police, other agencies were called in to assist. The bomb squad technicians disabled the device before 3 p.m.

FOX31’s Courtney Fromm was at the scene and said dogs were brought in to learn more about the explosives in the device. Based on the location of the device and the area, police decided not to evacuate the Safeway the pipe bomb was placed behind.

LPD said there is a heavy police presence at the Safeway off of Mineral Avenue and Broadway.

Police said the area is secure but to avoid it until the investigation is completed.
