ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — North Metro firefighters said they were responding to a fire at an oil and gas site Tuesday afternoon in Adams County.

Billowing black smoke could be seen for miles from the fire at East 160th Avenue and Quebec Street.

“The fire occurred in a tank that collects and holds water used during operations to plug an oil well,” North Metro Fire said. “Some residual oil in the water tank caught fire. Due to the oil involved, we couldn’t use water from the engines to extinguish the fire, but the fire was contained to the tank.”

Just before 5 p.m., the fire department said the fire was contained on site. About 20 minutes later, they said the fire was out and crews were beginning to leave the scene.

Firefighters used “environmentally friendly foam used to extinguish oil and gas fires” in their response, North Metro said.

Thornton and Brighton each assisted in the fire response.

FOX31 asked what company was operating on the property, but North Metro did not have immediate information to share.
