EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A police officer fell about 30 feet off a bridge while trying to arrest a suspect, according to the Fountain Police Department.

It happened after a high-speed chase Thursday night on Interstate 25, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The Fountain police officer was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. On Friday morning, FPD provided an update that the officer was in stable but critical condition following the initial CT scans. The officer is resting with his family at his side.

Police said three suspects were in custody, at least one of whom was suspected of multiple felonies, and they were in a stolen vehicle before the multi-agency police chase began just before 8 p.m.

Police said the suspect vehicle was disabled in the area of South Academy Boulevard and Hartford Street, but then the suspects tried to run away. That’s when the officer fell from the bridge while trying to take them into custody.

South Academy Boulevard was shut down between I-25 and Drennan Road, according to the Colorado Springs Department.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said it was on the scene to assist the Fountain Police Department.

Fountain Police said further information would be released overnight.
