DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Mayor Michael Hancock nominated Phil Washington to lead Denver International Airport Monday.

Washington was the former CEO of the Regional Transportation District, before taking the CEO position of Los Angeles Metro, the major transportation agency in the nation’s second largest city.

“I’m honored to be nominated for this role by Mayor Hancock, and excited to have the opportunity not only to return home, but to lead one of the premier airports and airport teams anywhere in the world,” Washington said.

Washington was an executive at RTD for 15 years before making the jump to Los Angeles. He served as General Manager and CEO for nine years, and was assistant general manager before that. He served in the military for 24 years before taking the position in Denver.

As General Manager of RTD, Washington implemented the FasTracks program, the completion of Denver’s West Corridor Rail Line project, and the Union Station project.

He also implemented the public-private partnership resulting in the University of Colorado A Line, which opened in 2016.

Washington’s nomination comes after the retirement of DIA Chief Executive Officer Kim Day, who held the position for 13 years. Day officially retires in July.

Denver City Council will need to confirm Washington before he assumes the role.
