DURANGO, Colo. (KDVR) — Mark Redwine has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder of his teenage son, Dylan.

Dylan Redwine went missing in 2012, and his remains were found years later in a wooded area of La Plata County. Prosecutors argued that the boy had found compromising pictures of his father and had been confrontational about it.

In July, a jury found Redwine guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

“I have trouble remembering a convicted criminal defendant that has such an utter lack of remorse for his criminal behavior,” Judge Patrick Murphy said.

Dylan Redwine’s family gives statements

Dylan’s family gave statements at the sentencing hearing on Friday.

“When I think about what happened that night, it breaks my heart to think about Dylan looking up at his dad knowing: He’s the killer. He’s my killer,” Dylan’s mother Elaine Hall said. “And I’m wondering what were you thinking when you saw his big ol’ blue eyes. I don’t think it even phased you.”

Dylan’s brothers, Brandon and Cory, also gave statements.

“I hope one day you can take responsibility for what you did to Dylan. I hope you are not too proud to ask for forgiveness,” Dylan’s brother Brandon Redwine said.

“Mark may have physically taken him, and I can’t change that. But what I can do is tell the world is how a 13-year-old boy stood up to his then 50-year-old father and said all the things I regret never saying,” Dylan’s brother Cory Redwine said.

Dylan Redwine was last seen in 2012

Dylan was last seen alive in November 2012 during a court-ordered visit, which his brother testified he did not want to go on, and his mother has said she did not want to send him on the trip.

His remains were found in 2013 and 2015 about 10 miles away from Mark Redwine’s home near Vallecito Reservoir, northeast of Durango.

The trial had been delayed several times since it was initially set to begin in 2018. This includes an extended delay after Redwine’s lawyer was arrested on domestic violence charges in 2019, along with multiple delays related to COVID-19.
