LITTLETON, Colo. (KDVR) — A Littleton police officer was shot more than three times early Tuesday morning when responding to a call for a drive-by shooting.

The initial shooting was reported around midnight near South Bannock Street and West Powers Avenue.

When officers arrived in the area, they found the vehicle out of which the shots had reportedly been fired.

As police approached the vehicle and tried to make contact with the people inside, two people got out and ran away. Officers chased one of the suspects to an apartment building at 183 West Powers Ave.

At that point, police said the man they were chasing turned and fired multiple shots, striking the officer more than three times.

A second officer tried to rescue the first officer and pull him out of the area. At that time, the suspect took off.

The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery and is now stable in the Intensive Care Unit. His family has been notified and is with him, according to LPD.

Police are still searching for the suspect who shot the officer and the second person who ran from the vehicle when police approached.

One man who lives in the building where the shooting happened said he saw the initial shooting take place below his third floor window. 

”I heard the first three shots. Then I heard one later on and then the police showed up and I looked out my window and that’s when it all went down,” said resident Jeff Croup. 

One family tells FOX31 they scrambled for cover when bullets started flying. 

“My husband here all he did was dive out of bed and swoop them out of their bed and we both laid on them because we didn’t know what was going on. All we heard were gunshots,” said resident Alexandra Mitchem.
