Lightning strike starts fire at Great Sand Dunes National Park

ALAMOSA COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Update, 9:45 p.m. Great Sand Dunes National Park reopened around 8:15 p.m. after lightning sparked a fire there Wednesday afternoon.

The 306-acre Medano Fire was 80% contained, according to park officials. Fire crews were expected to work through the night until the fire is fully contained.

The National Park Service for the area tweeted it was started by a lightning strike in the grasslands along the entrance road along Highway 150.

Inbound traffic and the visitor center were closed, but there were no other evacuations at of around 4:30 p.m., park officials said.
