Homicide victim’s son followed suspect after his son was kidnapped

DENVER (KDVR) — A man accused of kidnapping a child after allegedly shooting and killing his grandmother was arrested late Friday night near Strasburg, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The child is the grandson of the woman killed by an apparent gunshot wound in the 4700 block of Durham Court around 8:15 p.m., the Denver Police Department said.

Clemente Flores-Hernandez, 43, was arrested near Strasburg after a short chase. Police said the child was uninjured.

A probable cause statement said the victim and Flores-Hernandez were in a dating relationship.

According to the statement, a witness identified as the victim’s son heard gunshots while he was in the basement. When he went upstairs, he saw Flores-Hernandez approaching him with a gun pointed at him.

There was a struggle, and the victim’s son said Flores-Hernandez assaulted him before he was able to get away.

Flores-Hernandez then took the child, who was the victim’s grandson, from the couch and left the house, the probable cause statement said.

The victim’s son followed Flores-Hernandez while he called police. He kept following until Flores-Hernandez was stopped by Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies. The victim’s son was then reunited with his son.

Flores-Hernandez was held on charges of investigation of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and first-degree kidnapping.

The victim was identified on March 2 as 44-year-old Karol Bedoya Mejia.
