GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — Friends of Johnny Hurley, the good Samaritan who was shot and killed by a police officer, demanded to see the video of the moments before his death at a rally in front of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. 

Adara Scarlet wore a wedding dress with large letter saying “release the video.” 

“This seems like an issue that shouldn’t be so difficult. We should have transparency. There’s obviously a video that exists of the officer that shot Johnny Hurley. We’ve seen the beginning of the video and I want to see the rest,” said Scarlet. 

Hurley was killed in Olde Town Arvada three months ago. He happened to be in the area where a gunman began firing shots targeting officers and killed policeman Gordon Beesley. 

Hurley used his concealed weapon to kill the shooter. 

This week the coroner’s report determined Hurley was shot and killed by a responding officer who allegedly saw him moving the attacker’s gun and thought he was the gunman who had killed Beesley. Some video of the gun battle that day was made public. 

“We saw the brutal murder Officer Gordon Beesley and it was tragic but we didn’t see the heroics of Johnny Hurley and the mistake with the police officer shooting our friend and so we need to see the video to see if he really picked up the AR-15 or not,” said “Friends of Johnny” member Bruce Baumann. 

The Friends of Johnny group members say their goal is to honor his memory by making sure police training is improved. 

“Police reform is necessary in order to make sure this doesn’t happen again so we can assess and identify the dangerous protocols that are right now keeping our streets unsafe and killing our heroes in the name of defending the town,” said Brent Kaufman. 

The group is hoping to meet with the Arvada Police Department to discuss its tactics during shootings like the one in Olde Town Arvada that left three people dead. 

A spokesman for the district attorney’s office said investigators are ethically prohibited from releasing evidence or additional information at this time. 

A Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting but has not released it’s findings.
