SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — Interstate 70 was shut down in both directions at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel Monday night due to police activity.

The closure stemmed from a high-speed chase that started in Silverthorne, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 8:59 p.m. on Monday night, a Silverthorne officer saw a gray car driving without headlights near I-70. At around the same time, a possible kidnapping was dispatched that involved a gray car, according to the sheriff’s office.

The officer tried to stop the grey car on the ramp to eastbound I-70.  The pursuit started when the gray car failed to stop and started driving the wrong way down the ramp, striking another vehicle and turning back onto eastbound I-70, according to the sheriff’s office.

The pursuit continued on I-70 at a high rate of speed. The suspect lost control of the vehicle when it exited the tunnel and it crashed, according to the police report.

After the crash, Silverthorne police were advised that the suspect and suspect’s car were not involved in the possible kidnapping, according to the sheriff’s office.

About 9:30 p.m., CSP said a suspect was in custody.

The agency said firefighters had to extinguish a car fire related to the incident.

The westbound lanes of the highway reopened about 9:45 p.m.

The eastbound lanes reopened about 11 p.m., according to CSP.

Silverthorne police are leading the investigation. The attempted kidnapping case is being investigated by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
