GLENWOOD CANYON, Colo. (KDVR) — The Colorado Department of Transportation opened westbound Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon, from West Rifle (Exit 87) to Dotsero (Exit 133) on Monday evening, just a few hours after reopening eastbound traffic.
“CDOT worked through the night on clean up of I-70 and made significant progress. It is anticipated that EB will reopen later this morning. WB remains closed with no estimated time of reopening,” shared CDOT.
Kane Schneider with CDOT said there was twice as much debris on the highway than Saturday as two additional slides occurred next to each other, so cleanup took longer.
“The most difficult part of this is the debris flow, its just soup. It’s hard to contain and hard to clean up,” said CDOT Supervisor Fred Cummings.
Another mudslide closed the highway on Saturday in the same area from the same conditions. View video from the mudslide on Saturday below.
“It’s part of a double-edged sword in terms of how does it impact our business. We haven’t seen any impact. For as many people who couldn’t make it here there are people that are stranded here and those people are going to the park,” said Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park General Manager Nancy Heard.
