PARK COUNTY, Colo. — One of the people taken to the hospital after a hot air balloon made a hard landing in Park County Friday morning has died.

“The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation by the FAA, NTSB, and Park County Coroner’s Office,” a statement from Park County Emergency Management said late Friday night.

A total of 11 people were aboard the balloon according to the NTSB.

The agency said the balloon was carrying nine passengers and two pilots.

Two female passengers were injured, one of whom was transported by Flight for Life to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, according to the Park County Sheriff’s Office. She was the one who died.

The NTSB said the envelope (the balloon portion of the aircraft) collapsed while the balloon was coming down for its scheduled landing after being in the air for about one hour. The balloon was being operated by Colorado Hot Air Balloon Rides.

Tommy Cederlund, who is a balloon pilot for Colorado Hot Air Balloon Rides,  said there is no damage to the balloon or the basket and it will be used Saturday morning for a scheduled flight.

Park County Undersheriff Dave Wohlers previously said nine people were aboard the balloon and three people were taken to the hospital following what he described as a “hard landing.”

Wohlers said the incident happened near Hartsel, not far from where Highways 9 and 24 meet.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the incident.
