DENVER (KDVR) — More than a week after Gov. Jared Polis announced the state secured 2 million additional COVID tests that would be shipped to Coloradan’s doors, the state is seeing demand surge for the service.
The additional Abbott BinaxNOW rapid tests are part of Colorado’s rapid at-home testing program. So far, the state has shipped 70,024 tests to Coloradans and the demand is outmatching the supply.
“We’re thrilled with the reception of it, we always want demand to be more than supply,” Polis said. “So this is great. It means every test we get is going out into the field without delay.”
So far the wait time for these tests is between one and two weeks, but the governor hopes clearing a backlog will help even out that delay. The state is seeing requests for roughly 5,000 tests per day.
Eight COVID tests come in each order, and the state is considering if they should break that number in half to be able to deliver test kits to more people.
The demand comes as COVID-19 positivity and incidence rates trend down across Colorado. The state currently has the sixth-lowest COVID-19 rate compared to the rest of the country.
“We hope that is simply a function of people getting vaccinated, people getting protection and the precautions people take around others like masks and social distancing,” Polis said.
From Sept. 20-27, 38 counties saw a decline in COVID-19 positivity, 21 saw a rise in COVID-19 positivity, two counties had no movement and three counties administered fewer than 10 tests in the past week.
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Scientific Director of Laboratory Services Dr. Emily Travanty said they’ve seen a surge in demand for more testing in Weld and El Paso counties, and have allocated more resources and community testing sites in those areas to meet it.
