BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – Damage caused by the fast-moving Marshall Fire was seen from above Friday morning, as Gov. Jared Polis surveyed the area from a helicopter.

Cameras were on board, capturing an aerial view of the aftermath of Colorado’s most destructive wildfire in history. More than 500 homes were destroyed, but the total could be as high as 1,000, Polis said Friday.

Images from the helicopter tour show neighborhoods leveled by the fire, and some areas where some homes survived and others next door are gone.

The high winds that fueled the fire Thursday have subsided, and snow is in the forecast for Friday. Officials do not believe there will be any additional substantial damage.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for much of the most-damaged areas. Many people area awaiting the chance to return to their homes to see the areas for themselves.
