AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Update, 3:30 p.m. Interstate 70 has reopened.

Earlier: The Aurora Police Department said Interstate 70 will be closed for eight or more hours due to a fuel spill after a crash involving a semi and a tanker truck early Monday morning.

Aurora Fire Rescue said the crash happened before 9 a.m. near westbound I-70, just west of E-470. A tanker truck spilled hazardous materials on the roadway.

The westbound lanes of I-70 will be closed for at least eight hours while the spill is cleaned up, according to APD.

Officials for E-470 said drivers taking a detour off of I-70 to the E-470 exit can take Colfax Avenue back to I-70 before actually getting on E-470. The roadway is also backing up as getting on the toll road is avoidable. The flyover from E-470 northbound to I-70 westbound is now closed and travelers should use the Peña Boulevard exit as an alternate route.

The AFR Hazmat Team said it cleaned up approximately 1,500 gallons of ethanol spilled onto the roadway. Another 1,500 gallons were safely removed from the crashed semi. An outside environmental cleanup crew is now working to minimize the effect of the spill.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

We will update this story when the interstate reopens.
