BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — A structure fire prompted evacuations in the Boulder foothills as high winds fueled the spread of the blaze on Monday afternoon.

The fire in the 2900 block of Sunshine Canyon Drive was 40% contained as of Tuesday morning.

The Boulder Office of Emergency Management said the fire had little to no growth Monday night into Tuesday morning.

New information on the fire can be found in an updated story posted Tuesday afternoon.

Evacuations, road closures for fire in Boulder County

9:25 a.m.: Per fire management, the fire had no, to little growth overnight. Firefighters have increased their containment to 40%. We will receive an updated fire size after a multi-mission aircraft flyover. There are 60 firefighters working on the fire this morning.

9:15 a.m.: The shelter at the the East Boulder Community Center will close at 9:30 a.m. this morning. Community members displaced by the fire have found alternative places to stay. 

8:15 a.m.: The Boulder OEM said there were no significant changes or growth in the fire last night. We anticipate being able to provide an update once the incoming crews relieve the overnight crews and complete their transition and briefing

8:25 p.m.: The Boulder OEM does not expect to lift the mandatory evacuation order or road closures overnight. Any chances will be sent through the Everbridge system. Alerts will be posted at boulderoem.com under “View Recent Emergency Alerts.”

7:25 p.m.: The fire is about 25% contained. Around 200 personnel have been helping with the fire and will remain on the scene as they work for more containment, according to Boulder OEM. Changes to evacuations and road closures are expected soon.

6:28 p.m.: The American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming has opened a shelter for evacuees. The shelter is located at the East Boulder Recreation Center at 5660 Sioux Dr., Boulder, CO 80303. Small domestic pets (leashed) are allowed at the shelter with their guardians.

5:37 p.m.: Mapleton Avenue (which becomes Sunshine Canyon Drive) is closed at 4th Street to the west. Linden Avenue and South Cedarbook Street to the west is also closed.

5:34 p.m.: The fire is estimated at 16 acres.

5:16 p.m.: The number of impacted people in the mandatory evacuation order areas is estimated at 937 people. There are 389 structures within that area, 346 of which are homes. Another nearly 7,000 residents are under an evacuation warning and are advised to be ready to evacuate.

5:03 p.m.: Evacuation warnings for west Boulder between Linden Avenue and University Avenue have been lifted.

4:02 p.m.: The East Boulder Community Center at 5660 Sioux Drive will open at 5:30 p.m. for people needing services as an evacuation site due to the Sunshine Fire.

3:44 p.m.: An evacuation warning, which means to prepare to evacuate, has been issued for the area(s) of west Boulder between Linden Avenue and University Avenue due to the wildfire.

3:28 p.m.: The Boulder County Fairgrounds is open for large animal evacuation.

2:49 p.m.: A red flag warning has been issued in Boulder County through 6 p.m. Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Jessica Lebel said, “It’s not common for them to issue one this late in the day for only a few hours but it seems like they are concerned based off of how the fire is reacting.”

2:44 p.m.: The Humane Society of Boulder Valley located at 2323 55th St. is accepting evacuated small animals from the fire in Sunshine Canyon. Free pet food and supplies are available for those impacted by the fire.

2:33 p.m.: Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers are evacuating Mount Sanitas due to the proximity of the wildfire.

The National Weather Service said winds are gusting up to 40 mph in the area out of the west which is helping the fire spread quickly.
