DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver School Board has voted to censure Director Tay Anderson after an investigation into sexual assault allegations against him.
The report said the most serious assault allegations were unfounded, but he did make unwelcome sexual comments and advances toward members of the Never Again Colorado Board of Directors and had flirtations with a 16-year-old DPS student since his election to the board in 2019.
Anderson stood firm in his opposition to Friday’s school board decision to censure him, holding a press conference to oppose the vote before the meeting.
“This vote today was rushed within 48 hours. This vote today is unprecedented and has no plans, no real foundation in our Denver Public Schools policy,” Anderson said.
This is the first time, that we know of, that a Denver Public School Board member has been censured. Some Anderson supporters believe he was discriminated against.
“The NAACP state conference and its leaders are deeply troubled by the possible vote to censure the DPS school board Director Mr. Tay Anderson. After months of unspecified and unwarranted investigation, the calls for censure smack of unfairness and may indeed open DPS to civil rights inquiry,” said Tony Henderson, NAACP of Colorado’s religious affairs director.
Those claims led to rebuke from some parents who were there to protest and call for Anderson’s resignation.
“It’s not about race, it’s not about anything except that guy is a predator, a pedophile and I’m personally sick and tired of it,” said Hugo Chavez-Rey, a grandparent to DPS students.
Jeana Hoch came to Anderson’s press conference with a megaphone, calling on his resignation.
“If Tay Anderson does not choose to resign as we very much feel he should, we do plan to start a recall,” Hoch said.
With the exception of Anderson, all members of the board voted to censure the director. Before the vote, he said he was prepared for the censure and to get back to work.
The censure does not impact Anderson’s involvement on the board but does serve as a formal rebuke of him and his actions.
